Appendix B: System requirements

Logos Bible Software is the leading Bible software company for programs in Spanish.  Their latest Biblioteca Académica Bilingüe package (BAB) provides 144 Spanish titles as well as more than 5 Bibles in Greek, Hebrew and Latin,  and 63 titles in English.

1.  Advantages
The main advantages of the Logos Bible software system are:

  • Extensive library:   essentially Logos consists of a library of hundreds of books that can be consulted.
  • Powerful search engine:  the program uses a powerful search engine which can be adjusted in a variety of ways to analyze the library for themes, words or phrases.
  • Textual exegesis:   detailed exegetical information on a Bible text,  using the original Greek or Hebrew if desired,   can be obtained quickly
  • Synchronized windows:   different Bible versions,  commentaries and dictionaries can be opened at the same time and interconnected so that a change in a verse in one window will automatically cause the other windows to adjust to the same verse.
  • Spanish-English interface:  it is easy to have a Spanish,  or English interface and this includes menus, toolbars and help notes.  It’s the only Bible software to provide this.

2.  What it can do
For Seminary students or pastors the most useful part of the program is its ability to analyze Biblical texts and words.     For example, a pastor might be preparing a sermon on John 14:15-17 about the coming of the Holy Spirit as the Counselor,  the Spirit of Truth.  Entering this reference in the "Exegetical Guide" engine provides an analysis of each word in the passage as follows:

  • Comparison of the Spanish and the original Greek (the Greek can also be heard audibly).
  • Grammatical details of each word.
  • Dictionary and lexical information:   typically three Spanish dictionaries, lexicons or morphological studies explain the word,  with an additional seven available in English.
  • Statistical information of where each word is found in the NT.

With this background information the student or pastor can then put the same reference in the "Passage Guide" engine and the following information is generated:

  • Commentaries: the complete text of five Spanish ones and four in English.
  • Cross references and parallel passages:  all the relevant texts in other parts of the Bible are shown, including OT quotes related to the New Testament.
  • Key words:  list of the most important Greek and English words.
  • Bible comparison:  six different Spanish Bible versions compared in a diagrammatic form as well as a comparison of the actual texts
  • Map:   this shows the relevant geographical parts of Jerusalem where the discourses of John 15 and 16 were given.
  • Themes:  list of Biblical themes included in the passage.
  • Illustrations:  list of possible illustrations for some of the themes
  • More information: There is still the option, "Search Entire Library for Passage". Using this provide more references, particularly in books on theology, hermeneutics and pastoral issues.

Or suppose a  student is preparing a thesis on the concept of parable in the Spanish Bible. To search the library generally for  "parábola",  the word is placed in the "Basic Search" engine and this produces 2080 references in 90 books.  However it is a quick job to look down the list of books and select the eight or so publications that deal with hermeneutics and read the relevant entries.   Simply by a mouse click the content of each reference is shown on the screen.

The student may then decide to look particularly for the use of the word " parábola" in the Bible.    After entering  this word in the "Bible Word Study" engine the following information is generated:

  • Hebrew OT background:  giving the Hebrew word "mashal" and all its occurrences in the Hebrew OT or the equivalent translation in Spanish.
  • Greek NT usage:  giving the Greek "parabalo" with all its occurrences in the Greek NT or the equivalent in the Spanish Bible.
  • Concordance information on each occurrence of the word with its grammatical form in the original languages and in Spanish.
  • Dictionary information in the Bible dictionary and in the Systematic Theology texts.

For the first chapter of his thesis the student may decide to examine the use of the word parable in the Old Testament.    Entering the Hebrew consonants for " mashal" results in the "Bible Word Study" engine generating the following information:

  • Dictionary information:  5 dictionaries of Biblical Hebrew (1 in Spanish,  4 in English) explain the word.
  • Different translations:  the 20 different word groups with the 80 different grammatical forms, in which the Spanish Bible translates "mashal".  This information is presented diagrammatically with the full references easily available. As well as "proverb" or "parable", the word can mean "govern" or "rule", giving the idea of the parable as a standard to dominate life.
  • Hebrew Bible:  all the verses where the word occurs are cited with grammatical details.

3.  Weakness
Logos might seem like the ideal program for students and pastors but there are some significant inadequacies:

  • Non-academic publications abound.   The  fundamental fault is that BAB is build upon two less advanced packages:  the Spanish Pastoral and Bible Study programs.  This means that BAB is not dedicated to academic resources and so only about one third of the library consists of the kind of titles which could be cited in a seminary essay.  The remainder are general Christian literature.  For example the 47 Estudios Bíblicos volumes are simply popular Bible guides more at the level of a Bible class in the local church than at a university.
  • Basic publications are missing.   Only one Bible dictionary is available,   there is no Hebrew grammar in Spanish, no Septuagint, no critical apparatus for the NT,  and Josephus and Philo are not available in Spanish.    The basic writings of the early church period are not included.
  • Chaotic library organization.   Selecting "My Library" and "Themes" produces a list of about 100 diverse titles which bear little resemblance to ordinary library referencing.  Unfortunately it is not possible to reorganize the subject divisions in "My Library".    Even the listing on the software packaging shows the same inability to categorize books with,  for example,   titles on preaching appearing under three different areas and original language publications by Barclay,  Trench and Girdlestone being placed under the wrong sections.
  • Fast computer required.   The software works around the Search engine analyzing the books quickly and if the computer is inadequate the program becomes frustratingly slow.  Logos recommends a 1GHz Pentium III with 384 MB of RAM but most users would find that a quicker system than this would be better (see Appendix B).

4.  Evaluation of resource changes
There have been a considerable number of resource changes since the previous version of BAB.   Some of these are welcomed,  particularly the interlinear Bibles,  but others have been a disappointment,  especially the removal of the Septuagint from the program.  A comparison of the resources offered in the new BAB compared with the previous package is given in the following table.    Those upgrading from the previous version of BAB will still have full access to all the titles in that edition.  For a full list of resources see Appendix A.

Good.
The Message and New King James are useful additions

Wuest’s Expanded New Testament

New King James

The Message

The NET Bible

Interlinear Bibles

Interlineal inverso del Antiguo Testamento – español-hebreo

Excellent.
Useful for those learning Greek and struggling with Hebrew.  Although those wishing to dominate the languages will not find them so useful.

Interlineal inverso del Nuevo Testamento – español-griego

ESV - Greek-English Reverse Interlinear

ESV - Hebrew-English Reverse Interlinear

Greek,  Hebrew and Latin Bibles

Septuaginta – Morphologically tagged edition, Alfred Rahlfs

Biblia Sacra - Vulgata Clementina

Bad.
Poor exchange: the Greek Septuagint for the Latin Vulgate is not academically justifiable.

Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia w/ Westminster Morphology

The Andersen-Forbes, Hebrew Bible w/ morphology

Scrivener's Textus Receptus (1894) w/ morphology

Comentario exegético y explicativo de la Biblia, AT y NT- JFB

Excellent.
The extension of the Mundo Hispano series is most welcome.  JFB is an old commentary but has good exegetical insights.  Keil and Delitzsh is also an old but excellent commentary on the Hebrew Bible.  The 49 volumes of Estudios Biblicos are not academic writings.

6.  Is it worth buying?
This is an excellent piece of software for the pastor or seminary student.  It is broad ranging in its resources,  easy to use and will help in preparing sermons, essays and monographs.

For those with limited finances it is worthwhile considering the Biblioteca Pastoral ($189.95).  This consists of all the Spanish resources in BAB,  including the interlinear texts,  but does not include the Bibles in Greek,  Hebrew, Latin and English nor the books in English.
